Jon Paul Hammond was born on July 19, 1960 and was raised in Philadelphia.
He attended Germantown Friends School and graduated from Friends World
College. Battle-scarred by the Drug War, he was a militant, devoted harm
reductionist, political activist, and queer Quaker anarchist to the end. He
was a co-founder of Prevention Point, the first and only syringe exchange
program in Philadelphia and of the Harm Reduction Coalition. He worked as an
ethnographer at the University of California San Francisco conducting
research with drug users to stop the spread of HIV. He was a pioneer in
developing harm reduction methods for crack users. He was an unwaveringly
courageous and yet vulnerable man. His laughter was deep and embracing. He
is survived by his mother, Rochelle Sinclair Hammond, his brother, Martyn
Luther Hammond, his wife, Wende Elizabeth Marshall, and scores of relatives,
friends and comrades who loved him deeply. His presence on this earth will be
profoundly missed.

Hi, All ...
I got word a couple of hours ago that Jon Paul Hammond had died of an
overdose on Friday evening. I tried to reach the list with this sad news,
but the email apparently didn't go through. Jon was supposed to present at
the conference in Austin, together with Christopher Smith, a mutual friend,
who let me know about Jon's death. Christopher is dedicating his
presentation to Jon, and said to me that he would like to participate in any
memorial that is put together for Jon at the conference.
Jon Paul's passion and commitment were inspiring, and his spirit will
continue to inform our work.
Walter
