Hi Everyone:
Phill Wilson of the Black AIDS Institute is speaking at the opening of the
International AIDS Conference. He is conducting a series of calls with
different communities looking for input into what key points he should
include in his presentation. This call will take place next Thursday May
3rd at 3:30 est. Within the body of theis email is the registration
information for the call. If you can't make the call (or even if you can)
there is also a survey monkey on the same subject. Given that Phill will be
speaking at the opening and the cameras will be on him, this is a good
opportunity to spotlight some really obvious issues such as the
reinstatement of the federal ban, that drug users are the HIV success story
in the US (no thanks to the feds!), incarceration of drug users particulary
as it affects people of color and the travel restrictions on drug users and
sex workers attending the conference. Whether or not you are able to attend
the conference or even have an interest, this is a good opportunity to put
some thoughts forward to a captive audience.

Phill Wilson AIDS 2012 Plenary Address: “The US Epidemic”
We want your input!
In January the International AIDS Society announced that Black AIDS
Institute CEO Phill Wilson had been selected to give a plenary address at
AIDS 2012 on the US epidemic. As the US hosts the conference for the first
time in 22 years, this plenary will play an important role in shaping the
domestic HIV/AIDS message for the conference. Phill and the Black AIDS
Institute see this as a great honor and a great responsibility. With more
than one million Americans living with HIV or AIDS, and one of the most
complex and enduring epidemics in the world, there is a lot that can and
should be said. This is where you come in…
The Black AIDS Institute, in partnership with the Harm Reduction Coalition,
invite you injection drug users, sex workers, and their allies participate
in a special national conference call to voice your priorities and concerns
for this plenary address, on Thursday May 3, at 3:30pm Eastern. Phill
Wilson will be on the line to hear directly from you. To register for the
call, please visit:

*-*Although a web address will be given upon registration, this will only
be a conference call, without a web component.*
If you are unable to join the call on May 3, there are other options for
sharing your input. We will also host a number of other targeted
constituency calls over the coming weeks—stay tuned for details. Also,
written feedback can be submitted via online survey until May 15. To
provide written comments, please visit:

Thank you in advance for your input!

*Prompting context and questions:*
1. Phill has about 20 minutes for his plenary address. Given the
short time, what about the epidemic among drug users and/or sex workers do
you think he must cover?
2. What does the world need to know about drug users and sex workers
in the US?
3. What is the single most important challenge facing IDU and sex
workers’ access to treatment and prevention in the US today?
