3/1/96
Atlanta Harm Reduction Working Group
1996 Conference
Friday and Saturday
March 22 & 23, 1996
Atlanta, GA
Harm reduction is a model and set of strategies that encourage users to reduce the harm done to themselves and communities by their licit and illicit substance use. In allowing users access to the tools needed to become healthier, we recognize the competency of their efforts to protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities.
The Atlanta Harm Reduction Working Group Conference is a two-day meeting designed to promote and advance harm reduction policy in the Southeastern United States. Scheduled for March 22 and 23, 1996, this coincides with the consideration of a statewide harm reduction bill in the legislature in the Spring 1996 session, and the 1996 Olympic Games, which will be held in Atlanta during July.
This conference targets health care workers, social service providers,
outreach workers, drug treatment workers, educators, lawyers, law enforcement
agents, and academics and researchers. The focus is on education for these
influential groups of individuals by introducing to them and discussing
harm reduction history and theory as it applies to direct services and
outreach. Specific objectives include:
1) presenting practical strategies for incorporating harm reduction into
services and programs;
2) providing current national and local examples of agencies and individuals
working in harm reduction and
3) developing networks of people currently working in harm reduction.
The conference will be at the campus of Emory University in the Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta. Hotel rooms will be reserved at the Emory Conference Center Hotel located across the street from campus.
